Fediverse

A network of independent, interconnected social servers that talk to each other over shared protocols, so accounts on different platforms can follow and reply across them.

The fediverse (federated universe) is a loose network of independent social servers that interoperate, so someone on one platform can follow, reply to and boost someone on another. The best-known example is Mastodon, but the same plumbing connects a growing set of apps.

It runs mostly on ActivityPub — and, increasingly, an alternative stack in the AT Protocol world — which is why it matters to founders: no single company owns the audience. It's the natural home of microblogging that isn't locked to one feed or algorithm.
