The written text accompanying a post or image — the body copy that carries the message after the hook lands.
A caption is the text that sits with a post: the words under a photo, the copy beneath a video, the body of a status update. It opens with a hook and usually closes with a call to action, with the substance in between.
Every platform caps caption length differently, and most collapse long ones behind a "more" link, so the first line does the heavy lifting. A few well-chosen hashtags help discovery, but stuffing them in reads as spam and rarely helps.
